Programme to improve Positive Attitudes towards Creating a Noble and Righteous Society Together with Economic Development in the Country ( This is complement to the Plan of Action to Transform Sri Lanka into the “Wonder of Asia” as spelt out in Mahinda Chinthana Manifesto )
 
01. The Concept
As spelt out in Mahinda Chinthana Idiri Dekma (Mahinda Chinthana Vision for the Future), “the man” should be pious and possess intelligence and wisdom if he is to be physically stable and intellectually robust. For a cohesive society, interpersonal relations between the parent & child, husband & wife, teacher & student, employer & employee, master & servant etc. should be consolidated and made more productive. The Suspicion & impacience should be dispelled from the society. Through these measures it is envisaged that a well-secured society could be ushered in to build social development parallel to the anticipated rapid economic growth in the country.
 
02. Objectives of the National Programme
To raise consciousness of the people on the pride and dignity of the nation.
To create a society imbued in self-discipline
To build up a society which is sensitive to the nature and its environment that could co-exist with the latter more harmoniously.
 
03. Target Groups
Household units
Student community of Schools/Dhamma Schools/Private Academies etc.
Student Community in the Universities, Vocational Education and Higher Educational Institutions
Government and the private sector employees, the self-employed and the pensioners
Members of Community Organizations, Samurdhi and Youth Societies, Janasabas, and institutions involved in Civil Security.

05. Media Usage
  State Television & Radio
 
Line up Media Institutions to create and mount programmes designed to encourage and motivate the public to follow good practices and virtuous attitudes.
Formulate a code of ethics for the media institutions that would encourage them to produce T.V. programme that would help popularise healthy practices and favourable attitudes in the society.
Encourage production of programmes that would kindle necessary impetus and motivation to the society to harmoniously co-exist with the environment.
Encourage telecasting TV/Radio programmes that would enhance the feelings of national pride and dignity.
Programmes that would promote self-discipline among the public to be encouraged.
The public should be sensitised in general through electronic media regarding the detrimental effects that would cause both to the society as a whole and to the individual in the absence of self- discipline in the society.
Discourage TV/Radio programmes which do not conform to accepted good practices /attitudes and are incompatible with Sri Lanka’s cultural norms and ethics.

Give prominence to programmes that would motivate and promote national pride, and self-discipline and surface wholesome social norms and practices
Telecast programmes that would contribute to enhancing positive attitudes among school children and elders in the society
Mount programmes that would promote children’s and elders sensitivity towards the environment
Improve children’s awareness on the importance of cultivating virtuous attitudes and practices through the medium of cartoons, animation pictures etc
  Print Media
 
Publication of articles in the newspapers, magazines and periodicals that would promote positive and virtuous attitudes and self discipline among the public
Publication of articles that would kindle and enhance national pride of the people
Publication of a children’s newspaper that would provide a forum for broader discussion and dialogue on matters such as good thoughts and ideas on positive attitudes, national honour and pride etc
Publication of handouts explaining the programme

Encourage to write and publish books / publications on themes and subjects that would help motivate the young and the old alike to mould their character with positive / virtuous attitudes
Preparation/publication of calendars, timetables etc. that would project national pride and self-discipline of the people
Publication of books with pictures and drawings suited to children that would kindle their interest and motivate them to cultivate and develop positive / virtuous attitudes
By popularizing such publications and with increasing sales the economic position of the writers and publishers would be improved. Their Talents and efforts sould be suitably recognized and rewarded through awards /Prizes
  Lectures and community based programmes
 
Conduct lectures / seminars and implement programmes at the regional level to motivate people of varying age-groups to develop positive attitudes.

  (Assistance all of all the other Government & Non - Government organizations will be required in the long run.)
 
Projects so far implemented under the programme of development of Positive attitudes.
 
  Essay writing and Art Competitions were conducted under the theme, development of positive attitudes among the students in Moneragala District in line with “Deyata Kirula Exhibition”.
  A series of programmes on cleanliness was launched among the school children under the theme " You are urged to be clean always ‘
  With the objective of cultivating positive attitudes a series of one
Act play titled “Piyagetapela” which runs in to 12 episodes has been produced to be televised. It is now being telecast over Rupavihini Channel.
  A CD catering dramatized version of “Sirith Maldama” Anthology of Poem was produced and distributed free of charge among the schools of the Island.
  A series of programmes catering to specific groups such as, parents, teachers, students etc. for promotion of positive attitudes were launched in the Jaffna District.
  A programme is being prepared to telecast visuals (Video Clips) through TV Channels to convey the message of cultivating positive attitudes.
An advertisement focusing the theme of good attitudes is being designed to be telecast over Rupavahini channel.
